Our Southeast News Sustainability Meetup is a regional event for independent newsroom leaders, funders, and supporters from the Southeastern states to connect with and learn from one another. The Southeast Meetup will take place in Durham, North Carolina, from Tuesday, Oct. 3 to Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023<\/strong>. Attendees will have ample opportunity to network with peers, gain new knowledge and industry insights, and perhaps most importantly, celebrate the excellent work of local, independent news organizations from across the country and Canada.<\/p>\nLION’s 2023 News Sustainability Meetups and the 2023 LION Awards are generously sponsored by The Walton Family Foundation, The John S. and James L. The LION Local Journalism Awards Ceremony and Dinner is a staple of the Southeast Meetup, taking place Tuesday evening and recognizing dozens of LION members making significant strides toward sustainability. Award finalists are highly encouraged to attend the LION Awards Ceremony and Dinner and the entire Southeast Meetup, regardless of where their business is based. The ceremony and dinner is also open to all attendees of the Southeast Meetup, and you do not need to be a LION member to attend. - Wendi Thomas, MLK50<\/a>\n
\n- Wendi C. Thomas is the founding editor and publisher of MLK50: Justice Through Journalism, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom in Memphis focused on poverty, power, and policy. Previously, Thomas worked at The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal, The Charlotte Observer, The (Nashville) Tennessean, and The Indianapolis Star. She was also a 2016 fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. Her honors include the 2020 Selden Ring Award, a 2020 Gerald Loeb award, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press’ 2022 Local Champion Award, and the 2020 I.F. \n- Eden Fineday is an Indigenous woman from so-called “Canada” and the publisher of IndigiNews, a culturally respectful, Indigenous-led online journalism outlet. She leads a team of journalists who report on – and primarily for – Indigenous Peoples. IndigiNews is one of the few Indigenous-led journalism outlets in the world that practice trauma-informed reporting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

\n- Mazin Sidahmed is co-executive director of Documented, a nonprofit news site that covers immigration in the New York area. Before founding Documented, he was a reporter at the Guardian US in New York on the national desk as well as with the award-winning Guardian Mobile Innovation Lab. He started his career covering the Syrian refugee crisis in Beirut, Lebanon for the local English-language newspaper The Daily Star.<\/li>\n
- Ja Keen has begun his newest entrepreneurial endeavor – Ja Keen Fox Solutions – a consulting firm dedicated to educating political candidates, elected officials, nonprofits, and startups on creating policies that advance positive socio-economic outcomes for communities of color, centering community-based solutions in policy-making, and convening impacted communities to ensure real engagement and accountability. Ja Keen Fox Solutions is the culmination of all of Ja Keen’s experience and skill sets paired with his lifelong passion to improve the station of Black and Brown people in America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

\n- Luanne Rife is the executive director of Cardinal News. She has worked in local news for nearly four decades as a reporter, editor, editorial page editor, and commentary editor. She took an early retirement from The Roanoke Times in April 2021 when she learned continued staff cutbacks meant little ability to do in-depth reporting. \n- Candice Fortman currently serves as the Executive Director of Outlier Media. Her work ensures that the organization makes consistent and timely progress in achieving its mission while building a sustainable newsroom that challenges traditional editorial and business models. Before joining Outlier, Fortman was the Marketing and Engagement Manager at WDET 101.9. Fortman is a 2021 alum of the JSK fellowship at Stanford, where she studied how the business model of journalism impacts low-wealth communities. Additionally, Fortman sits on the board of Cityside, which operates Berkleyside and The Oaklandside. She is also an advisory board member for OpenNews, which connects developers, designers, journalists, and editors to collaborate on open technologies and processes within journalism. \n- Lisa Heyamoto is Director of Programming, Member Education at LION Publishers. She collaboratively leads LION’s programming strategy by designing and overseeing programs, products, and experiences that help independent news organizations become more sustainable. She was previously an educator and program coordinator at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, and a reporter at The Seattle Times and The Sacramento Bee. Co-creating aspects of the solidarity and new economies have been a focus of theirs, having helped bring the first participatory budgeting process to the South in Greensboro, North Carolina, working with the Fund for Democratic Communities in the field of cooperative economics, curating over a dozen community-engaged murals, and most recently helping to launch Freedom Fridges. \n- Maritza L. F\u00e9lix is an award-winning freelance journalist, producer, and writer in Arizona. She is the founder of Conecta Arizona, a news-you-can-use service in Spanish that connects people in Arizona and Sonora primarily through WhatsApp and social media. She is the creator, producer, and host of Cruzando L\u00edneas, an award-winning podcast that reclaims the narrative of the border. She is the co-founder, co-producer, and co-host of the Comadres al Aire podcast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Hanna Raskin, The Food Section<\/a>\n
\n- Hanna Raskin is editor and publisher of The Food Section, a newsletter covering food and drink across the American South, launched in 2021. The Food Section has since been named Best New Business by LION, a Trailblazer by the International Association of Culinary Professionals, and Best Newsletter in the American Journalism Online Awards. Raskin previously served as food editor and chief critic for The Post and Courier in Charleston. Her work has been recognized multiple times by The James Beard Foundation. In 2023, Raskin won the Beard for Dining & Travel writing. A past president of the Association of Food Journalists, Raskin is a frequent contributor to Garden & Gun and the Southern Foodways Alliance’s columnist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Richard Young, CivicLex<\/a>\n
\n- Richard lives in Fayette County, Kentucky, and works on civic health at the local level. He is the Founder and Executive Director of CivicLex, a civic health and media organization recognized as a solution for rebuilding American Democracy for the 21st Century by the Library of Congress and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Richard has also served as a founding Steering Committee member and steward for the Kentucky Rural-Urban Exchange, the preeminent place-based framework in the United States for bringing together rural and urban communities to understand their interdependence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Award finalists are highly encouraged to attend the LION Awards Ceremony and Dinner and the entire Southeast Meetup, regardless of where their business is based. The ceremony and dinner is also open to all attendees of the Southeast Meetup, and you do not need to be a LION member to attend.
