{"id":215940,"date":"2022-05-09T13:00:32","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T17:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/?p=215940"},"modified":"2022-05-09T13:00:34","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T17:00:34","slug":"median-annual-revenue-increased-33-for-lion-members-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/median-annual-revenue-increased-33-for-lion-members-data-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Median annual revenue increased 33% for LION members, data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>News businesses that are members of LION Publishers reported earning a median annual revenue of $125,000 in 2021 \u2014 a 33 percent increase compared to a self-reported median annual revenue of $94,000 in 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s according to the latest membership data we collected from nearly 400 LION members about the current state of their businesses.<em> <\/em>More than half of LION members that shared financial data in both 2020 and 2021 experienced revenue growth, which is an encouraging sign of journalism businesses becoming more financially healthy as they work to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-sustainable-news-business\/\">achieve long-term sustainability<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We credit that progress to increased <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/slulay2\/status\/1483905808945618944\">community investment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theajp.org\/news-insights\/announcements\/local-coalition-to-launch-nonprofit-newsroom-in-houston\/\">philanthropic support<\/a>, training and resources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/announcing-the-lion-gni-sustainability-audits-and-funding-program\/\">dedicated to sustainability<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/part-i-what-news-founders-wish-theyd-known-about-launching-a-media-business\/\">peer-to-peer<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/part-ii-what-news-founders-wish-theyd-known-about-launching-a-media-business\/\">learning<\/a> from LION and other journalism-support organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What it all adds up to: a landscape in which an independent news business with only one or two full-time employees can reliably earn more than $100,000 in annual revenue. In 2021, more than 50 of LION\u2019s smallest member organizations hit that milestone, the data shows, further proving the viability of the community-centered approach many LION members are taking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve also seen a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/introducing-project-oasis-a-deep-dive-into-the-fast-growing-world-of-independent-news-startups\/\">visible<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/reporting-editing\/2021\/more-than-50-local-newsrooms-launched-during-the-pandemic\/\">surge<\/a> in new journalism businesses, as well as the growth of LION\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/members\/\">membership community<\/a>. A few stats:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>LION\u2019s membership has increased 71 percent year over year.<\/li><li>LION\u2019s Aspiring Entrepreneur membership tier (for recently or soon-to-be-launched businesses) has nearly quadrupled year over year.<\/li><li>LION Aspiring Entrepreneurs now make up nearly 25 percent of LION\u2019s membership community.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another encouraging trend: More independent news founders who identify as a member of a traditionally underrepresented community \u2014 including those who identify as Black, Indigenous or as a person of color (BIPOC) \u2014 are launching news businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In 2022, 22 percent of our members identified as a race or ethnicity other than white, up from 17 percent in 2021.&nbsp;<\/li><li>32 percent of our Aspiring Entrepreneur members identify as coming from a traditionally underrepresented community.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of our Aspiring Entrepreneur members come to LION through our programs, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/introducing-the-24-news-businesses-in-our-second-google-news-initiative-startups-boot-camp\/\">recent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/our-third-gni-startups-boot-camp-will-support-16-canadian-news-entrepreneurs\/\">cohorts<\/a> of the Google News Initiative Startups Boot Camp, and through partnerships such as the Tiny News Collective\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@tinynewsco\/meet-the-first-cohort-of-the-tiny-news-collective-86ee6a3876c5\">2021<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@tinynewsco\/introducing-the-newest-members-of-the-tiny-news-collective-742e2b272d8b\">2022<\/a> cohorts. We\u2019re encouraged by other efforts, such as Borealis Philanthrophy\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/borealis\">Racial Equity in Journalism Fund<\/a>, to further support BIPOC journalism leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The growth in news organizations that are led by traditionally underrepresented founders and dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/special_report\/journalism-power-public-good-community-infrastructure.php\">community-led journalism<\/a> is an important step toward improving equitable access to news and information. Historically, <a href=\"https:\/\/googletrends.github.io\/asne\/?filter=race&amp;view=0\">newsroom founders, leaders and staff have been majority white<\/a>, which has often contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/mediareparations.org\/how-local-media-fueled-the-tulsa-massacre-and-covered-it-up\/\">harmful<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanreports.org\/articles\/journalism-must-be-an-act-of-community-building\/\">insufficient coverage<\/a> for underrepresented or marginalized communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a more in-depth snapshot of our LION membership as of Spring 2022:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LION Membership Overview<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Revenue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual Revenue under $100K: 44%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual Revenue between $100K and $500K: 33%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual Revenue between $500K and $1M: 7%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual Revenue over $1M: 11%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Location<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have members in 47 states in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. We\u2019re continuing to refine our data collection processes by revisiting our annual membership application and combining them with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectnewsoasis.com\/\">Project Oasis<\/a> and our Sustainability Audits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s member-reported data like this that has helped inform LION\u2019s new membership benefit, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/learn\/sustainability-audits\/\">LION-GNI Sustainability Audits and Funding program<\/a>.
