{"id":215645,"date":"2022-02-02T18:10:25","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T22:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/?p=215645"},"modified":"2022-02-07T17:39:27","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T21:39:27","slug":"introducing-a-small-business-newsletter-for-digital-news-publishers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/introducing-a-small-business-newsletter-for-digital-news-publishers\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing a small business newsletter, specifically for digital news publishers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectnewsoasis.com\/\">digital news boom over the past five years<\/a> has included nonprofits and for-profits, topical podcasts and hyperlocal newsletters, one-person teams and full-fledged newsrooms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, independent online news is a big tent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there\u2019s at least one thing these publishers share in common: They\u2019re all small businesses, responsible for managing a budget, filing taxes, and delivering a product to consumers regardless of their size, medium, or tax status.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At LION, we\u2019re focused on helping these small businesses become stronger and more sustainable, which we believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lionpublishers.com\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-sustainable-news-business\/\">starts with a foundation of operational resilience, financial health, and journalistic impact<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our newsletter will share this goal, and it will also reflect the feedback you shared in <a href=\"https:\/\/lionnewsletter2021.paperform.co\/\">our reader survey<\/a> last December.&nbsp;(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/us8.campaign-archive.com\/home\/?u=31fb0ac82cb4a8d09fdeccf51&amp;id=c13072eb57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Check out latest editions<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what we learned from that survey, and how we\u2019re using it to shape what comes next.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\" style=\"border-color:#0057a3\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0057a3\"><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lionpublishers.us8.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=31fb0ac82cb4a8d09fdeccf51&amp;id=c13072eb57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sign up for the LION newsletter.<\/a> <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Revenue is your top concern.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 80 percent of you chose funding opportunities as one of the content types you find most useful, ahead of practical tips and case studies (75 percent), industry news (64 percent) and skills-building opportunities (57 percent).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also asked \u201chow could the newsletter be <em>more<\/em> useful to you,\u201d and funding opportunities and strategies were among the most-cited answers:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cIf it included more funding opportunities.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cMore content on creative \u2013 even collaborative \u2013 approaches to funding.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><li>\u201cFocusing more on funding sources \u2013 and sharing the challenges faced by other LION members.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve heard you loud and clear: The<strong> <\/strong>newsletter will have a stronger focus on money going forward, including how to raise it (capital), earn it (revenue) and manage it as a small business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. You want to learn from each other.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The LION community has always had a strong ethic of learning and growing together, and that\u2019s one reason many of you cited for signing up for the newsletter:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cTo stay up to date with fellow organizations.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cTo find out about new ideas in local journalism.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cTo learn what other independent publishers are doing.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, we launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/lion-publishers\">News Guest<\/a> podcast to help amplify our members\u2019 work and share insights into how they\u2019re accomplishing it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We plan to double down on that type of content in 2022, with more case studies and practical advice featured in the newsletter each week.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. You want to better understand the independent news industry.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another takeaway from our reader survey is that you want to understand the broader context that independent news businesses are operating within, and how that context is changing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>\u201cI appreciate the specific lens on this part of the journalism industry.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cI want to keep up with news and developments in this area of journalism.\u201d<\/li><li>\u201cI want to learn more about indie publishing, present and future.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We also saw your interest in industry news reflected in our metrics: Our most opened and forwarded newsletters last year were the ones that offered an original perspective on industry trends, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/lionpublishers.com\/frankly-im-burned-out-7983482?e=[UNIQID]\">the challenge of burnout<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/lionpublishers.com\/what-to-make-of-the-two-mr-smiths-7230322\">the bigger picture behind Ben Smith and Justin Smith\u2019s new venture<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, our newsletter will continue to think big-picture about the trajectory of independent news, and share what we\u2019re learning from our research and programs at LION.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. You don\u2019t like emojis in the subject line.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, at least one of you doesn\u2019t! So we\u2019re going to try axing the emojis for a while and see how it goes. (If open rates go down, the emojis will be back. \ud83d\ude09)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also received a few other format suggestions that we\u2019re planning to test:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Breaking the content into multiple newsletters<\/strong>. To better serve our members, we\u2019re going to send a special version of the newsletter at least twice a month that will focus on making the most of their membership.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Publish more content focused on Canadian markets and outlets<\/strong>. We hear you, Canada! More content from north of the border to come.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Provide a summary of conversations in the News Entrepreneur Community Slack grou<\/strong>p. There&#8217;s so much great conversation that happens in our Slack community, so a couple times a month we&#8217;ll round up some of the best gems and link out to active threads you might have
