Here\u2019s a preview of the Lightning Talks:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.borderlessmag.org\"><strong>Borderless Magazine<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><em>(Chicago, IL)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presenters:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michellekanaar.com\/about\"><strong>Michelle Kanaar<\/strong><\/a>, cofounder and art director, and<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nissarhee.com\/\"><strong>Nissa Rhee<\/strong><\/a>, executive director and cofounder<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borderless Magazine will present on its second comic book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/borderlessmag.org\/2021\/05\/06\/reclaiming-the-sacrifice-zone\/\">Reclaiming the Sacrifice Zone<\/a>.\u201d Borderless staff teamed up with Southeast Youth Alliance organizer and writer Maria Maynez and illustrator Mike Centeno to document the struggle of Latinx organizers against environmental racism on the Southeast Side of Chicago. After publishing the comic online, Borderless distributed hundreds of print copies in English and Spanish to residents, government representatives, and students at Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Park District. Along the way, they experimented with new ways of measuring and deepening engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"http:\/\/matternews.org\"><strong>Matter News<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><em>(Columbus, OH)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presenter: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matternews.org\/author\/cassie-young\">Cassie Young<\/a><\/strong>, cofounder and managing director<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team at Grey Matter Media and Matter News will provide an overview of their internal team site and show you how to make your own (no web skills necessary!). <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/gmm-smarty-pants\/home\">Smarty Pants<\/a> is a comprehensive, souped up, and user-friendly organizational handbook and directory, which is meant to empower employees, board members, and volunteers by equipping them with the information and tools they need to get their hands dirty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lbpost.com\"><strong>Long Beach Post<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(<em>Long Beach, CA<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presenter: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/author\/stephanie-rivera\/\"><strong>Stephanie Rivera<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>community engagement editor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivera will present on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpressinstitute.org\/publications\/articles\/how-the-long-beach-posts-community-editorial-board-provides-more-than-opinion\/\">Long Beach Post<\/a>\u2019s community editorial board that brought together Long Beach community members with different life experiences and expertise to meet virtually every week. The community editorial board discusses issues they want to examine, publish monthly editorials or opinion pieces, and serve as a valuable resource for reporters. Rivera will share how the Long Beach Post created the community editorial board, along with lessons learned that other publishers can keep in mind as they set up their own.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.queerency.com\/\"><strong>Queerency<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><em>(Austin, TX)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presenter: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traversj.com\/\"><strong>Travers Johnson<\/strong><\/a>, founder<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Queerency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queerency.com\/holidayqueer\">Holiday Queer Gift Guide<\/a> showcases hundreds of queer-owned businesses to shop for the holiday season and it is the largest lead magnet for new subscribers to Queerency&#8217;s weekly newsletter. While they often report on topics pertaining to trauma, La Converse recognizes it is important to take the time to discuss how these stories impact <em>them<\/em> and how to do a better job.
