We were floored by the number of applicants, and by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lionpublishers.com\/our-24-boot-camp-graduates-have-big-ambitions-heres-how-you-can-help-ea5ed4640bd0\">success of the 24 news businesses<\/a>&nbsp;that launched from the eight-week program. Now, we\u2019re thrilled to announce that the 2021 Boot Camp is back and, like any great sequel, it\u2019s better than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"0128\">We\u2019ll be launching separate cohorts in both the U.S. and Canada to better meet the needs of entrepreneurs in each country. The U.S. Boot Camp starts Sept. 7, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/airtable.com\/shrH3p4yy8HAqYm6H\">applications<\/a>&nbsp;open today. The Canada Boot Camp will begin at the end of the year, with applications opening in early fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e410\">Both Boot Camps offer proven and practical guidance for launching a digital news startup. They will be led by entrepreneurial expert Phillip Smith, who brings decades of experience training founders to create financially-sustainable news businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c187\">\u201cAs the creator and director of the Boot Camp, I strive to ensure that the experience is customized to advance the objectives of each participant,\u201d Smith wrote in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/google-news-initiative\/startups-boot-camp-2021\">this<\/a>&nbsp;post. \u201cI want everyone involved to get the tools and information they need to give their project the best shot at sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f962\">The fully-remote program will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Live, online sessions to learn best practices for launching a news startup<\/li><li>One-on-one coaching with experienced specialists<\/li><li>Peer learning from a large, diverse cohort<\/li><li>Access to tools and technology to help you refine and test your idea<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5ec4\">The Boot Camp covers everything you need to incubate and execute your idea, and because of our partnership with the Google News Initiative, we\u2019re able to offer it to news entrepreneurs at no cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e72c\">We\u2019re expanding the program because we believe supporting independent news businesses is the best way to ensure that community information needs are met with depth, context and integrity. The past year clearly demonstrated the urgency of those needs, and we feel everyone benefits when more local news organizations rise to meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a924\">Our research through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectnewsoasis.com\/\">Project Oasis<\/a>&nbsp;has found that the independent media landscape is robust and growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6733\">Consider this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>There are at least 700 digital news startups across the U.S. and Canada<\/li><li>266 of those launched in the past five years, with an average of 50 launching each year<\/li><li>One in seven operates in a news desert, which is an area where a newspaper has closed or that has been traditionally overlooked<\/li><li>Most are bootstrap operations working in a challenging, but improving, financial environment<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6919\">A proven way to meet that challenge is to start with a clear-eyed view of what it takes to run a news business, as well as the training you\u2019ll need to build a strong foundation beneath it. That\u2019s where the Boot Camp comes in. We\u2019ll provide the guidance and support that enables you to launch with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3c15\">Interested yet? We hope so! We also understand that many people don\u2019t necessarily see themselves as news entrepreneurs, or believe they aren\u2019t qualified or ready for such an opportunity. That\u2019s how former Boot Camp participant Stacy Feldman felt before she launched&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boulderreportinglab.org\/\">The Boulder Reporting Lab<\/a>&nbsp;in Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"7155\">\u201cI came into this program drowning in entrepreneurial self-doubt,\u201d she said when last year\u2019s Boot Camp concluded. \u201cI feel far more confident and courageous as I take my first big steps. Up to two people on your team can participate in the program.<\/li><li>You haven\u2019t already launched your news business or, if you have, it is less than a year old<\/li><li>Your news business is or will be independently owned<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"65eb\"><strong>What kinds of business ideas are eligible?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Efforts focused on delivering local news and information<\/li><li>Reporting-based businesses focused on encouraging civic engagement<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a326\">We will give preference to ideas that serve a specific area or people in a specific area, based on what we learned from the previous program. However, if you\u2019re focusing on a topic or subject, we\u2019ll consider your application if you\u2019ve already launched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5cb1\"><strong>How many participants will be selected?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"3793\">We will select up to 24 entrepreneurs or teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1000\"><strong>What are the dates again?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"693d\">The U.S. Boot Camp will run from September 7 to November 5, 2021 (includes a one-week break).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1da3\"><strong>What if I\u2019m not ready to talk publicly about my idea because I don\u2019t want my employer to know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6634\">Apply anyway! We understand that some news businesses may need to operate in stealth mode for a while.
